My parents gave the kids an art plate kit from Makit Plates and our order just arrived this afternoon. The kids were very excited to see how their plates came out. The last time they made these was about four years ago and as you would expect their subjects and drawing skills have really changed. They've moved on from flowers, Star Wars and stick figures to Doctor Who and Pokemon.
Makit kits come with thin paper and a set of washable markers. You can draw anything you want on the paper, but as we learned the first time you need to make sure the kids aren't saturating the paper as it will rip. Once the drawings are done you submit them with your order form and in a few weeks you get a new set of melamine plates.
We really like these plates. The kids love using plates they've designed and we've found that they are pretty durable and dishwasher safe (a must!). The kit we had included six sheets of paper, but I wish I'd seen the prepaid kit with 25 sheets -- although knowing my kids they would have used each and every sheet of that 25 and expected 25 plates. I'm totally *not* going to tell them we could make our own tumblers and bowls, either.
